Mental Health Nursing

Nursing is an important profession they are the first people that make the first contact with the ills and the sick. They always need to have the basic medical knowledge and skills to tackle all kinds of patients be they the mentally ill or the physically ill. Nursing courses not only teach the students about knowledge but also the skills required to handle the basic medical equipment that can perform the preliminary or basic diagnostics. Mental health nursing, also known as psychiatric nursing, is a specialized field of nursing practice that involves the care of individuals with a mental health disorder to help them recover and improve their quality of life. Mental health nurses have advanced knowledge of the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of psychiatric disorders that helps them provide specialized care. They typically work alongside other health professionals in a medical team intending to provide optimal clinical outcomes for the patient. Mental illness can affect individuals of any age, ethnic origin, or socioeconomic status. For this reason, a mental health nurse may need to work with many different individuals from various backgrounds. The primary role of a mental health nurse is to provide care to patients with a psychiatric disorder, mental health issue, or behavioral problems. Many of the tasks performed by a mental health nurse are similar to that of a psychiatrist and include diagnosis, psychotherapy, and prescription of medications. Some mental health nurses also choose to specialize further, such as in the management of individuals with a psychiatric disorder of a certain age or association. These may include pediatrics, adolescents, geriatrics, substance abuse, and eating disorders. Mental health is an important aspect of the study, as it focuses on that part of the human anatomy that is the most delicate and easy to be disturbed by almost every factor that exists in daily life. Mental health is all those problems that ruin the harmony of an individual's brain and feelings. The result of mental health illness can be devastating as they are usually not detected and also to make it worse human beings tend to hide it, it affects the decision making or clear thinking of any individual so every action taken may not be rational or event the correct instinct may not be followed. The course will have a dedicated 150 hours of focused learning. This unit develops students' knowledge of the physical, mental, and biopsychosocial factors that contribute to personal, individual, family, and community mental health. It also examines the role of the nurse and the health team in caring for persons who have alterations to their emotional and mental wellbeing across the lifespan. In particular, it will enable the student to develop a holistic and consumer-oriented recovery approach to the provision of nursing care highlighting the therapeutic use of self, and ethical, legal, and professional boundaries that influence practice. When it comes to delivery of the course the university has offline as well as online methods. The university has a student portal that students can access from anywhere at any time for various kinds of tasks. All student material will be available online once the respected faculty members upload it online on the portal and students can access it all the time. There are discussion forums where students can discuss relevant matters for growth and development by sharing each other’s views and knowledge as peer support is important and peer learning is effective. There will be plenty of practice examinations and case studies available on the portal for the students to follow or to practice at any given point in time so that they can improve find their flaws and work on development. Also, the students can raise a request for extra classes or remedial classes that will be later reviewed by the university, and later a class will be scheduled for the student. There are certain qualities that the students should be having to be successful in this field. The qualities that management look for in the nurses during hiring are as follows: The students must be compassionate, empathetic and non-judgemental The students must have a sharp interest in mental illness and behavioral disorders They must possess exemplary communication skills They should be emotionally stable with strong self-awareness They must have problem-solving and critical thinking skills They must be able to pay attention to every detail

When it comes to nursing the students are required to be disciplined and nothing is proof of discipline other than attendance hence the institute has given 10% weightage to the attendance criteria students with poor attendance will have their credits affected. Then there will be the mid-term examination that will have 20% weightage of the credits. This will be in a written format and will follow the traditional style of question and answers method. All chapters taught till then will be included. Then there will be the final term examination that will have 30% of the weightage and that will include every chapter in the course and that too will follow the traditional question and answer format however it will also have small case studies to solve. Then there will be a project that will be a reflective journal and will have a 20% weightage and here the faculty will provide multiple options to the students they are allowed to choose any and complete the project within the allotted time. Then the last 20% weightage is given to the scenario handling project where the students will be given a specific scenario that they have to handle correctly and recommend solutions to the problems to make it better.
